The Gouldian Finch is a curious and endearing little bird. It is a native of northern Australia, but is highly endangered in the wild due to habitat destruction and disease. In captivity however it is quite secure, being one of the most popular finches kept and bred all over the world. One look at it's brilliant colouring and it's not hard to see why. Ironically, until 1999 anyone living in Australia who wanted to breed this colourful finch and had more than 19 birds had to be licenced to do so. This discouraged many younger Australian birdkeepers from getting involved with this species. No such restrictions however applied in other parts of the world.
