Regeneration in the mountains

After the fires It's now 12 months since the mountains burned, and life is gradually returning. On the lower slopes where the fires were cooler, the blackened trunks sport lush new growth shooting out all over like a leafy green cloak. High in the hills at the back of Mt Beauty where the fires were at their most fierce the dead trees stand like silent sentinels. It is an alien landscape of blackened trunks, with ghostly white branches pointing to the sky, standing in a sea of green grasses and wildflowers. These dead trunks will never grow again, but from the base life starts to spring anew.

Autumn in Macauley Street

The colours of Autumn With cooler temperatures, overcast days and the start of the rains, it looks like winter may be on the way for the region. In response, the decidious trees gracing many Albury avenues and gardens have put on their autumn splendour. Brilliant reds, oranges and gold foliage can be seen down virtually every street.

North East Victoria Burns After days under a blanket of smoke from fires in the MtBeauty and Corryong areas of Victoria, an afternoon wind briefly clears the air before new fire outbreaks near Eldorado and Wodonga create spectacular smoke plumes over the entire southern horizon.
Camera: Olympus E10; 360 degree panorama composite of 10 images.
GPS: 36° 1' 21" S 146° 56' 45" E.
More images - living under the smoke: The smoke has filled the air for weeks now. Some days worse than others. A Smoked sun [2], or a Blood sun [3] in an otherwise cloudless smoke grey sky is the rule now. Some days the smoke is so thick only the foolish or the unfortunate venture outside without a face mask, and the city stores have run out of them! The view to Burrows Road [4] shows the erie yellow cast daylight, and looking towards Red Light Hill [5] it is only just possible to make out the outline of the hills.

End of the season As spring returns and the snow retreats, skiers enjoy sunny conditions during the last week of the season at Falls Creek, 2002. Despite the presence of the snow either side, the high roads were dry and dusty, and the mountain road below Falls Creek was alive with spectacular golden wattle.

Albury Airshow

Albury Airshow, March 10, 2002 at the Albury Airport, and the skies above. A marvelous static display of vintage, experimental, unusual and military aircraft was on show, allowing visitors up close to inspect and admire. The static display was followed by a breath-taking non-stop aerial show of skill and daring from the snappy aerobatics of Pip Boorhman's EDGE to the aerial precision of the Roulettes. It was a hot, dry, dusty, noisy and absolutely wonderful day!

Australia Day 2002 at Noreuil Park, Albury, Australia. The Albury City Band played to the gathered onlookers, punctuated at times by the steam driven whistle of the S.S.
